How Much Does Seminary Cost?

  • "I want to serve God and to know Him more fully, but I feel that apprenticeships at local churches are not rigorous enough to help me here!"

  • "While I know God, I feel that I do not have the skills necessary to educate students on the ways of God and His Holy Word. Are there any programs that can empower me to empower others?"

  • "I wish to be a member of God's kingdom and I want to serve God with the unique skills and passions that He gave me! However, I must first establish a strong foundation in theology before I begin ministry. Where can I go?"

These quotes, and many like them, have driven millions of Christians to Seminaries across the world! Seminary is where Christians go when they desire to know God more fully and communicate His Word more clearly to a broken and needy world. Whether it be a need to educate members of the local Church body or a desire to pursue Pastoral ministry, it is in the Seminary setting that students can grow towards their God-given calling.

However, time and cost are often an obstacle that prevents many passionate followers of Christ from running the race of service set before them. Should that be any reason to not receive your theological education? Here at Theos Seminary, we would like to echo the wonderful St. Paul:

"By no means!"

For the well-meaning students desiring a Christian education, the massive price tag associated with most Seminary educations leaves one with a genuine sense of dread. Some Seminaries, such as Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY) have tuition rates of over $24,000 for a three-year Master of Divinity!

Another, such as Denver Seminary, blows that out of the water at over $48,750 for a three-year Master of Divinity! If you are in the Dallas area, you may find yourself in quite a bind with Dallas Theological Seminary's tuition fees of around $71,000 for the same degree. Even with financial aid (which is hard to find in a master's program), this is still a mountainous expense. Likewise, you will be hard-pressed to find any scholarships that could make this more affordable! What is a prospective seminary student to do?

What Is the Average Annual Seminary Tuition Fee?

In pursuit of the average seminary tuition and fees, we have found that the average annual fee that accompanies tuition is around $210. Along with even the "lowest average" for tuition expenses per year, you will rarely find anything under $12,000 a year. However, these fees are often only including the fees of technological or processing expenses! When you consider all of the book expenses that often accompany these classes, this can easily double or triple for the average seminary!

Cost Per Credit Hour

While this metric will differ from institution to institution, there is no question that the expense is massive and a shock to those who have their hearts set on a rigorous Christian education. Even the audit fee can be quite a massive expense at your average seminary! According to some seminaries, the cost per credit/audit hour for a degree is:

  • Credit fee of $466-525 per credit hour

  • Audit fee of $125-150 per audit hour
